Registering with Tajikistan OVIR in Dushanbe
Updated March 2025, Registering with Tajikistan OVIR in Dushanbe was originally published in December 2024
If you’re entering Tajikistan visa-free or using the visa-on-arrival scheme and staying in the country for more than 10 business days, you will need to register with OVIR (Department of Visas and Registration of Foreign Citizens).
If you need to register with OVIR in Dushanbe, you will find all the steps below.
Planning to register with OVIR in Khorog? Check out my post on registering with OVIR in Khorog to find out all the requirements as they do differ from those at the Dushanbe office.
Please note that if you are visiting Tajikistan with the e-visa, you DO NOT need to register with OVIR.

OVIR Dushanbe Office Hours
The OVIR office in Dushanbe is open from 08:00 to 17:00 Monday through Friday.
The Registration Process at Dushanbe OVIR
The OVIR registration process in Dushanbe is pretty simple.
Enter the building and walk to the window on the back wall. Let them know you need OVIR registration (and a GBAO permit if you’ll be needing one of those too).
A couple of the officers in the OVIR office do speak a little English and in my experience have been quite helpful.
They will ask for your passport and for a copy of your hotel registration (ask your accommodation to make one for you). After you’ve handed that over, they will ask for payment (more on that in the ‘How Much Does OVIR Registration in Dushanbe Cost?’ section.
They then will tell you when it will be ready.
How Long Does OVIR Registration Take?
This can vary depending on how early in the day you arrive at Dushanbe OVIR and the mood of the officials working that day.
I arrived shortly after 08:00 and was told it would be ready between 16:00 and 17:00.
How Much Does OVIR Registration in Dushanbe Cost?

I’ve heard varying amounts- in my experience in June 2024, it was 210 TJS to get it the same day but I have seen amounts varying from 150-250 TJS. This can vary largely if you want to get it the same day, the mood of the officer working, etc.
Note that OVIR is also where you will need to purchase your GBAO permit if you plan to go to the GBAO (Pamir). In my experience, the GBAO permit costs 100 TJS if you want to get it the same day or 50 TJS if you can wait until the following day to pick it up. This price can also vary depending on who you’re dealing with and the mood of the officer on duty.
Want to Avoid the Headache of OVIR Registration All Together?
Most hotels, hostels, and guesthouses in Dushanbe will handle the registration process for you for a fee (expect the total, including the cost of registration to be about $25 USD).
Do note that you can opt to enter Tajikistan with the e-visa which does not require you to register with OVIR at all.
